Obituary

Martha Spilchak, beloved wife of the Late Fred Spilchak of Ituna, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2019. She was ninety years of age. Prayers will be held on Monday, November 11 at 7:00pm, preceded by the Rosary at 6:30pm in Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ituna. The Funeral Liturgy will be held on Tuesday, November 12 at 10:00am in Sacred Heart Ukrainian Catholic Church. The interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Saskatchewan Cancer Foundation as gifts of remembrance.

Martha was born on March 8, 1929 to Anton and Donia Smysnuik in the Churchill district north of Ituna, Saskatchewan, the seventh of ten children. She received her education at Churchill School and Ituna High School.

On June 1, 1947 she married Fred Spilchak at Sacred Heart Church in Ituna. Together, they farmed for 35 years, raised their family of 5 children and actively served their parish and community. In 1982 they semi-retired from farming by building a house and moving to Ituna, gratified that their son Dennis would continue farming the family homestead. They loved to travel, visit family and support their parish and community. Martha was a tireless and dedicated member of the UCWL.

Her hobbies included sewing, quilting and knitting. As the family grew, each new grandchild or great-grandchild would receive a handmade quilt to snuggle up with. These treasured items continue to be fond reminders of Baba’s love for her family.
Martha loved to cook and bake, creating amazing meals it seemed like whenever two or more were gathered. And of course her perogy making bees, where her family would gather to take lessons in the fine art of forming & pinching and leave with dozens of the best tasting morsels that only Baba could make.
Martha also loved to play cards and on occasion she had a tendency to stretch the rules. When confronted to correct her play she would often lament that she could never win because “they won’t let me!”

In her second courageous battle with cancer, Mom would say she lived a good life and was blessed with a loving family.

She leaves to cherish her memory and celebrate her life three sons, two daughters, fifteen grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.
Son Emill (Karen) Spilchak, daughter Gail (Dale) King, son Myron (Joanne) Spilchak, son Dennis (Wanda) Spilchak, daughter Linda (Cameron) Renkas.

Grandchildren: Cory (Stephanie), Kelly (Tate), Stephen, Tracey (Dwayne), Dorian (Karla), Lesley, Rhonda, Pamela (Jordan), Bryan, Kyle, Rebecca, Grace, Michelle (Dallas), Ryan (Kristin), Brittney (Steven).
Great Grandchildren: Aidan, Connor, Sarah, Sadie, Rayne, Riley, Brayden, Markus, Tierra, Dominic, Lucie, Theo, Lennox, Emerlee, Keelyn, Makoy, Beau.

She is also survived by her sisters Anne Obuck, Natalie Zalusky, Sister Florentine Smysnuik, Helen Stewart, Lillian (Joe) Gelowitz and brother Nester (Natalie) Smysnuik, brother-in-law Henry (Iris) Spilchuk, sister-in-laws Micheline Wrenn and Helen McGovern. Also numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Martha was predeceased by her beloved husband Fred, parents Anton & Donia, brothers Anthony and Stanley, sister Kay Balanuik and three infant siblings.

The family is so grateful to all the staff at the Ituna Pioneer Health Care Centre. The most compassionate care and counselling given with the utmost respect and dignity. The kindness shown will never be forgotten. A special thankyou to Leanne Kozun at Home Care for her daily visits while Mom was at the Sunshine Manor.

To Dennis, Wanda and family,
Our deepest sympathy on Mrs. Spilchak's passing. May your memories of times spent with her help you through the coming days and weeks. I always enjoyed meeting her in the grocery store or on the street where we had many interesting chats about the weather, harvest progress, and sewing.
