Elenora Mildred Hillier (nee Scheuer), fondly known as Sally, passed away peacefully with family by her side on September 16, 2020 at the St. Paul Lutheran Home in Melville, SK at the age of 87. Born May 28, 1933 to Jacob and Magdalena (nee Sauer) Scheuer in Southey, SK, she was the fourth of seventh children and was fluent in both German and English.
Sally graduated from Southey School and sought a secondary education in nursing. She took great pride in her years as a psychiatric nurse in Weyburn, where she worked alongside her older sister, Leta.
On March 4, 1960, she married Richard Hillier and became a mother to two little girls, Gail and Sherry. Together they had four more children, Margo, Cory, Tracy, and Jody.
Throughout her life, Sally knew many professions and had an uncompromising work ethic. She was a psychiatric nurse in Weyburn, then a mother and homemaker in Yorkton. With Richard, she owned and operated a plumbing and heating business in Grenfell, a Home Hardware in Virden, MB, and she did all the bookkeeping for both businesses. Although she was most often seen wearing the color red because it matched her Home Hardware smock, her favorite color was always blue.
Sally made lasting friendships wherever she went and faithfully stayed in touch with each one. She could often be seen at the table writing letters and cards to family and friends. Her handwriting was beautiful.
Sally was naturally talented with many skills. She could refinish furniture, paint the house inside (with the latest techniques) and out, make homemade lotion and lye soap, sew, and knit sweaters for the family. She excelled at gardening, where she knew the names of all the plants and who she got them from. Her canning and preserves were delicious and abundant. Even if it turned out not as expected, she would say it was because she was making chokecherry syrup, not jelly! Family favourites include her beet and dill pickles, Christmas pudding, Bing cherries, and crab apple jelly. A generous cook and baker, she was known for her delicious donuts, strudel, plum dumplings, and a fruitcake that even fruitcake-haters enjoyed. She never stopped collecting recipes, even after her declining vision made it impossible to read them herself.
Sally had a great love for games and puzzles. She tackled challenging crosswords, in pen! The cribbage board and canasta cards stayed in the kitchen cupboard so they were close to the table for playing, after the meal and accounting books were cleared away. She held nothing back when playing Scrabble or Upwords, which were her two favorite games. She enjoyed the card games and friendships that she made when she lived at the Evergreen in Virden before moving to the Willowview Personal Care Home in Reston. She spent the last year and a half living closer to her kids at the SPLH in Melville, SK, where we brought all her favorite treats even if she hadn't eaten all of her vegetables, or any of them.
Predeceased by her parents, sisters Leta Ross and Frieda Cook, brother-in-law Lowell Cook, sister-in-law Anna Shire, nephew Brant Ross, and her husband Richard, Sally will live on in the hearts of her children Gail (Keith Vaughan), Sherry (Lawrence Kozak), Margo (Murray Thomlinson), Cory (Susan Hillier), Tracy (Bob Stoyand), and Jody (Evan Labas); her grandchildren Angela, Alia (Mitch), Jordan (Meagan)/ Jennifer, Crystal (Mike), Tamara (Shaun), Jessica (Garett)/ Trevor (Alecia), Tyler (Cindy), Jenine (Jeremy)/ Davis, Abby/ Summer, Bobby/ and Jeremy; and great-grandchildren Sailah, Nixon/ Sloan/ Emma/ Brynn, Kensi/ Bentley, Brooklyn, Spencer/ Peyton, and Will. She is also survived by her four brothers Ed Shire, Harry (Doreen) Scheuer, Mick (Myrna) Scheuer, and Ron (Clarice) Scheuer, and many nieces and nephews, extended family and treasured lifelong friends who will remember her fondly.
In Sally’s memory, plant a garden, share your perennials and seeds from your annuals, and always keep improving your language repertoire for the next Scrabble game.
